AI credits are how Embellish measures your usage of AI features. Every AI interaction — a chat message, an editor command, a copilot suggestion — uses credits from your monthly allocation.
How credits work
Each plan comes with a set number of credits per month:

The "approximate emails" is based on a typical workflow where a single email — from brief to finished draft — uses about 10–12 credits. Your actual usage will vary depending on how much you lean on the AI versus writing manually.
What uses credits
AI Chat — Each message in a chat conversation uses credits. Longer conversations and longer responses cost more. A quick question about subject line ideas uses fewer credits than asking the AI to generate a full email from scratch.
AI Commands — Each time you select text and use an AI command (rewrite, expand, shorten, add comments), it uses credits. Quick edits on a sentence use fewer credits than generating multiple paragraphs.
AI Copilot — The ghost-text suggestions that appear as you type use a small number of credits per suggestion. Individually they're inexpensive, but they add up during long writing sessions.
When credits reset
Credits reset at the start of each billing period — the monthly anniversary of your subscription. If you signed up on the 15th, your credits reset on the 15th of each month.
Unused plan credits don't carry over. They reset to your plan's full allocation at the start of each new period.
What happens when you run out
When your monthly credits are exhausted:
A banner appears in the AI Chat letting you know
The chat input is disabled
AI Commands and Copilot suggestions stop working
A modal shows your usage details and when credits reset
Everything else still works. You can write, edit, format, export, collaborate, and manage projects normally. Only the AI features pause until your credits refresh or you purchase more.

If you need more credits before your next reset, you can buy credit packs as a one-time purchase:

Purchased credits are different from your monthly plan credits in two important ways:
They never expire. Purchased credits carry over between billing periods indefinitely.
They're used second. Your monthly plan credits are consumed first. Purchased credits are only used once your monthly allocation runs out.
To buy credits, go to Settings → Billing and click Buy More Credits.
Checking your balance
Your billing settings page shows a complete picture of your credit usage:
A usage gauge showing how many monthly credits you've used (color-coded green, yellow, or red)
Your reset date
A breakdown by workspace — which workspaces are using credits
A breakdown by user — which team members are using credits
Your purchased credits balance (if any)
Credits are shared
Credits are shared across your entire organization. Every workspace and every team member draws from the same pool. If you have a team of three on the Flow plan (300 credits), those 300 credits are divided by usage, not pre-allocated per person.
Keep an eye on the per-user breakdown in billing settings if you want to understand how credits are being distributed across your team.
Tips for managing credits
Write first, refine with AI. Starting with even a rough draft and then asking the AI to improve it uses fewer credits than generating everything from scratch.
Be specific in prompts. A detailed prompt gets better results in fewer exchanges — which means fewer credits spent on back-and-forth.
Use context wisely. Including your Brand Profile and Project Brief gives the AI what it needs to get closer on the first try.
Consider upgrading if you consistently run out. Moving from Spark to Flow triples your monthly credits for $20 more per month. If you're buying credit packs regularly, upgrading is usually more cost-effective.
